Central America has one of the highest urbanization growth rates in the world. In 2001, it had a population of about 37 million people, of which 52% lived in urban areas, and about 42% of this urban population lived in slums.
By 2010, Costa Rica's population is projected to rise to a new total of 4.7million. 60% of the population would be situated in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) including Cartago, Alajuela and the Metropolitan Area of San Jose (AMSJ).
